In what was meant to be a day of celebration, rescue teams have mobilized at Shannon Falls Provincial Park near Squamish, B.C., where a search operation is currently underway for a missing man who disappeared during Canada Day festivities.
The individual, whose identity has not yet been released by authorities, was last seen Monday afternoon in the vicinity of the popular waterfall, according to Squamish Search and Rescue (SAR). Officials report that the man became separated from his companions during their holiday outing, prompting immediate concern.
“We received the call shortly after 5 p.m. on July 1st,” said David Thomson, coordinator with Squamish SAR. “Our teams immediately deployed to the area and have been conducting systematic searches of both the main trails and more challenging terrain around the falls.”
The search effort has intensified with additional resources being brought in from neighboring districts. North Shore Rescue has provided supplementary personnel and equipment, while RCMP officers are assisting with ground operations and managing the investigation aspects of the disappearance.
Shannon Falls, standing at 335 meters, is the third highest waterfall in British Columbia and a popular destination, particularly during holiday weekends. The tremendous water volume and slippery conditions around the falls create potentially hazardous situations for visitors who venture off marked pathways.
“The terrain in this area presents significant challenges,” noted Sergeant Melissa Jongema of Squamish RCMP. “We have steep gradients, dense forest coverage, and water hazards that complicate search efforts. We’re utilizing every resource available to locate this individual.”
Weather conditions have remained relatively favorable for search operations, with clear skies aiding visibility for aerial reconnaissance. However, as night fell on Monday, teams had to scale back certain aspects of the search until daylight returned.
Park officials have implemented partial closures of trails immediately surrounding the falls to facilitate rescue operations without interference. Visitors planning to visit Shannon Falls Provincial Park are advised to check for updates on accessibility before traveling to the area.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers present in British Columbia’s wilderness areas, even at popular and developed sites. In 2018, Shannon Falls was the site of a tragic accident that claimed the lives of three social media personalities who fell while swimming in pools above the waterfall.
Family members of the missing individual have been notified and are being supported by victim services as the search continues.
“We remain hopeful,” said Thomson. “Every hour counts in these situations, and our teams are committed to continuing the search until we have a resolution.”
