In the pre-dawn darkness of Toronto’s east end, a routine Wednesday morning was shattered when a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle, leading to immediate police response and an arrest. The incident, which occurred shortly after 5:30 a.m. near the intersection of Kingston Road and Midland Avenue in Scarborough, has renewed concerns about pedestrian safety in the city’s eastern corridors.
Toronto Police Service officers arrived at the scene to find a pedestrian with serious injuries after being hit by a vehicle whose driver initially remained at the location. Emergency medical services rapidly transported the victim to a nearby trauma center, where medical professionals are currently treating injuries described by authorities as serious but non-life-threatening.
“The initial investigation suggests speed may have been a factor,” said Constable James Morton, who spoke to reporters at the scene. “We’re examining traffic camera footage and speaking with witnesses who were in the area at the time of the collision.”
In a significant development, police have confirmed that the driver was taken into custody following preliminary investigation. Charges are pending as the Traffic Services division continues its detailed examination of the circumstances surrounding the collision. Officers have not yet released the identities of either the pedestrian or the driver involved.
The collision prompted an extensive closure of the affected roadway throughout the morning rush hour, causing considerable disruption for commuters and local residents. Traffic was diverted through neighborhood streets as investigators documented the scene, measured skid marks, and collected evidence that will form part of their investigation.
This incident adds to concerning statistics about pedestrian safety in Toronto. According to data from the Toronto Police Service, pedestrian collisions in the city’s east end have increased by nearly 12 percent over the past year, with a disproportionate number occurring during early morning and evening hours when visibility is reduced.
City Councillor Michelle Wong, who represents the ward where the accident occurred, expressed her concern about the incident. “This intersection has been flagged in previous safety audits. We’ve been pushing for additional pedestrian protection measures including improved lighting and reduced speed limits in this corridor,” Wong stated in a conversation with CO24.
Local residents have long advocated for enhanced safety measures along this stretch of Kingston Road, which combines high traffic volumes with numerous pedestrian crossings. The Scarborough Community Council has previously discussed installing additional traffic calming measures in response to similar incidents.
“I cross that intersection every morning to catch the bus,” said area resident Priya Sharma. “Cars are always speeding through, even when the light is about to change. It was just a matter of time before something like this happened.”
Toronto’s Vision Zero Road Safety Plan, initiated in 2016, aims to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries on city streets, but critics argue implementation has been too slow, particularly in areas outside the downtown core.
