In a troubling turn at one of Canada’s most celebrated summer festivals, three individuals were injured following an assault on the midway at the 2024 Calgary Stampede. The incident, which occurred Sunday night at approximately 11:30 p.m., has cast a shadow over what has otherwise been a successful return to form for the iconic western celebration.
According to Calgary Police Service officials, officers stationed at the Stampede grounds responded immediately to reports of a disturbance near the Nashville North stage, where they found three victims suffering from non-life-threatening injuries. Two men, aged 23 and 25, along with a 22-year-old woman, were treated by emergency medical services on site before being transported to a local hospital for further care.
“We had a robust security presence in place throughout the grounds, which allowed for an immediate response,” said Staff Sergeant Emma Richards in a statement to CO24 Canada News. “Our investigation indicates this was an isolated incident between individuals who were known to each other, not a random act of violence.”
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the altercation broke out in the crowded midway area. Sarah Donovan, who was attending with her family, told CO24: “Everything happened so quickly. One minute people were enjoying the festivities, the next there was shouting and people were scrambling to get away. Stampede security and police were there within minutes.”
The Calgary Stampede organization has issued a statement emphasizing their commitment to visitor safety. “The safety and security of our guests remains our highest priority,” said Stampede spokesperson Michael Thompson. “We are cooperating fully with police in their investigation and have provided all available security footage from our extensive camera network.”
This incident marks a rare security breach for the Calgary Stampede, which typically hosts over a million visitors during its 10-day run with relatively few serious incidents. The event, often called “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth,” has implemented enhanced security measures in recent years, including bag checks, increased security personnel, and expanded surveillance systems.
Calgary police have detained a 27-year-old suspect in connection with the assault. Charges are pending as the investigation continues, with authorities reviewing security footage and interviewing additional witnesses.
Despite the incident, Stampede organizers have confirmed that all events will proceed as scheduled for the remainder of the festival, which concludes on July 14. Additional security personnel have been deployed to ensure visitor safety.
