In a disturbing development that has heightened safety concerns in North York, Toronto police have launched an intensive search for a suspect following a sexual assault near Finch Avenue East and Leslie Street. The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning, has left the community on edge as authorities work to identify and apprehend the perpetrator.
According to investigators, a woman was walking alone shortly after midnight when she was approached from behind by an unknown male. The suspect allegedly grabbed the victim and sexually assaulted her before fleeing the scene. The woman immediately contacted police after the traumatic incident.
“This type of predatory behavior is extremely concerning,” said Detective Sarah Richardson of Toronto’s Sex Crimes Unit. “We’re utilizing all available resources to identify this individual and bring them into custody as quickly as possible.”
Police have released a description of the suspect, describing him as approximately 5’9″ tall with a medium build and short dark hair. At the time of the assault, he was wearing dark clothing and a baseball cap. Investigators are asking residents in the Finch and Leslie area to check their security footage for any suspicious activity between 12 a.m. and 1 a.m. on Tuesday.
The Toronto Police Service has increased patrols in the neighborhood while the investigation continues. Community safety advocates are reminding residents to remain vigilant, particularly when walking alone at night.
“We’re seeing a disturbing pattern of these types of attacks in areas previously considered safe,” noted Mira Patel, director of the Toronto Women’s Safety Network. “This highlights the ongoing need for both better street lighting in residential areas and more comprehensive safety resources.”
This incident follows several similar attacks in the Greater Toronto Area over the past month, prompting questions about whether they might be connected. Authorities have not yet confirmed any links but acknowledge they’re exploring all possibilities.
Local councilor David Chen has called for an emergency community meeting to address safety concerns and discuss preventative measures. “Our neighborhood deserves to feel safe. We need to work together—residents, police, and city officials—to ensure these attacks stop and perpetrators face justice,” Chen told CO24 News.
