In a disturbing escalation of violence in Calgary’s downtown core, a woman was fatally shot Monday evening in what police are describing as a targeted attack at a busy parkade. The incident, which occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m. in the 600 block of 3 Avenue SW, has sent shockwaves through a community already grappling with rising concerns about public safety.
The victim, whose identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin, was discovered by emergency responders following reports of gunfire. Despite life-saving efforts at the scene, she was pronounced dead, marking Calgary’s 13th homicide of 2024.
“We have reason to believe this was not a random attack,” said Staff Sergeant Martin Schiavetta of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit. “Our investigation suggests the victim was specifically targeted, though we’re still working to determine the motive behind this brazen act of violence.”
Witnesses reported seeing a dark-colored sedan speeding from the parkade moments after gunshots echoed through the concrete structure. Security camera footage from surrounding businesses is being reviewed as detectives piece together the sequence of events leading to the fatal shooting.
The downtown parkade, typically filled with vehicles belonging to office workers and shoppers, was transformed into a complex crime scene as forensic teams meticulously gathered evidence throughout the night. Yellow police tape cordoned off multiple levels as investigators in white protective suits conducted their examination.
“This occurred during a time when many people were still in the downtown area,” noted Constable Rebecca Davidson. “We’re urging anyone who may have witnessed unusual activity in or around the parkade between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. to come forward with information.”
The shooting comes amid heightened concerns about public safety in Calgary’s downtown core. Community advocates have pointed to a troubling trend of violent incidents in parking structures throughout the city in recent months.
“These enclosed spaces present unique security challenges,” explained urban safety consultant Michael Brennan. “Limited visibility, restricted escape routes, and minimal security presence make parkades potentially vulnerable locations, particularly during evening hours when foot traffic decreases.”
City officials have responded by announcing plans to review security protocols at municipal parking facilities, including the potential expansion of surveillance systems and increased security patrols.
“While we cannot comment on an active investigation, public safety remains our paramount concern,” said Councillor Terry Wong, whose ward includes portions of downtown. “We’re working closely with police and community partners to address both immediate concerns and longer-term prevention strategies.”
As the investigation continues, residents are left questioning what circumstances led to such a targeted attack in a public space. Was this an isolated incident or a sign of deeper issues affecting community safety in Calgary’s urban center?
