High-Speed Pursuit on Highway 407
A routine patrol on Highway 407 turned into a high-speed pursuit this weekend when Ontario Provincial Police officers intercepted a driver traveling at more than double the posted speed limit while allegedly impaired.
In the early hours of Saturday morning, OPP Highway Safety Division officers clocked a vehicle racing at approximately 200 km/h on Highway 407 near Milton, a shocking 100 km/h above the maximum posted limit. What made the incident even more alarming was that subsequent testing revealed the driver was operating the vehicle while impaired.
“This is one of the most dangerous combinations we encounter on our highways,” said Sergeant Kerry Schmidt of the OPP Highway Safety Division. “Excessive speed paired with impairment creates an absolutely deadly risk not just for the driver but for every innocent person sharing that roadway.”

According to official OPP reports, the driver, whose identity has not been released pending formal charges, faces multiple serious offenses including dangerous driving, impaired driving, and stunt driving. Under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, stunt driving alone carries an automatic roadside license suspension and vehicle impoundment.

The incident highlights an ongoing concern for highway safety officials across the province. Data from the CO24 News traffic safety monitoring program shows a troubling 12% increase in extreme speeding violations over the past year on Ontario’s 400-series highways.
