In a troubling incident that has sparked outrage across Toronto’s cycling community, police have arrested a man accused of deliberately pushing a shopping cart into a cyclist using the Danforth Avenue bike lane. The assault, which was captured on video and widely shared across social media, shows the shocking moment when the rider was violently knocked to the ground in what appears to be an intentional act.
Toronto Police confirmed yesterday that a 56-year-old Toronto man has been taken into custody and charged with assault with a weapon following the incident, which occurred near Danforth and Broadview Avenues in the city’s east end. According to investigators, the suspect allegedly wheeled a shopping cart directly into the path of an oncoming cyclist at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
“The video evidence in this case is quite clear and disturbing,” said Detective Sarah Mitchell of Toronto Police’s 55 Division. “What we see is not a mere accident but what appears to be a deliberate act targeting someone lawfully using designated cycling infrastructure.”
The footage, which quickly accumulated thousands of views after being posted to social media platforms, shows the suspect standing on the sidewalk before suddenly thrusting the shopping cart into the bike lane as the cyclist approaches. The rider had no time to react and was violently thrown from their bicycle upon impact.
Cycling advocates have pointed to this incident as emblematic of the ongoing tensions between different road users in Toronto. Jared Davidson, spokesperson for Cycle Toronto, expressed concern about the broader implications of such attacks.
“This type of behavior represents the extreme end of anti-cyclist sentiment that unfortunately exists in some corners of our city,” Davidson noted. “The vast majority of Torontonians want safe streets for everyone, regardless of how they choose to get around.”
The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries but was transported to a local hospital for treatment of significant scrapes, bruising, and a suspected concussion. They have requested privacy as they recover.
City Councillor Paula Fletcher, whose ward includes the area where the incident occurred, addressed the assault during yesterday’s council meeting. “This attack is completely unacceptable. The Danforth bike lanes were implemented to create safe passage for cyclists, and everyone deserves to travel through our city without fear of being deliberately harmed.”
This incident comes amid ongoing debates about bike lane infrastructure in Toronto, which has expanded significantly in recent years as part of the city’s climate action and transportation safety initiatives. The Danforth bike lanes, installed initially as a pandemic response measure in 2020, were made permanent following studies showing increased safety outcomes for all road users.
Police are continuing their investigation and are asking any additional witnesses to come forward. The accused is scheduled to appear at College Park Courts on December 15.
