In a surprising eleventh-hour decision that has reshaped the political landscape of southern Alberta, local radio personality Ryan Mennie has officially entered the Lethbridge mayoral race, submitting his nomination papers just minutes before Monday’s deadline. The unexpected announcement adds a significant new dimension to what was already shaping up as a competitive contest for the city’s leadership.
“This wasn’t a decision I made lightly,” Mennie told reporters gathered outside City Hall. “I’ve spent years covering our community’s stories, and now I believe it’s time to help write the next chapter of Lethbridge’s future.”
Mennie, a familiar voice to many through his extensive broadcasting career, joins a field that includes two previously declared candidates: Rajko Dodic, who previously served as mayor from 2010 to 2013, and current city councillor Belinda Crowson. Both established candidates have been actively campaigning since announcing their intentions earlier this year.
The timing of Mennie’s announcement has raised eyebrows across the political spectrum. Political analyst Dr. Geoffrey Hale from the University of Lethbridge notes this late entry could significantly alter campaign dynamics.
