In a chilling reminder of how sophisticated modern scams have become, a Manitoba mother recently experienced what thousands of Canadians now fear: an artificial intelligence-generated voice impersonation of her own child in distress.
Linda Reimer was at home in Beausejour when she received a frantic call from someone sounding identical to her son, crying and claiming to be in serious legal trouble. The voice on the other end of the line was convincingly authentic—the same inflections, the same speech patterns, and the unmistakable sound of her son in crisis.
“It was his voice. There was no question in my mind,” Reimer told CO24 News. “He said, ‘Mom, I need help. I’ve been in an accident and they’re saying it’s my fault.‘”
What followed was a carefully orchestrated attempt to extract money from a worried parent. After the initial emotional shock, the call was transferred to a supposed legal representative who demanded $9,000 for her son’s immediate bail—money that needed to be delivered in cash.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre reports that AI voice scams have surged by 68% across Canada over the past year, with victims losing an estimated $4.2 million in 2023 alone. The technology required to create these convincing voice duplications has become increasingly accessible, requiring just a few seconds of someone’s voice from social media videos or public recordings.
“What makes these scams particularly effective is the emotional manipulation,” explains cybersecurity expert Daniela Morrison from the University of Manitoba. “When someone believes their loved one is in danger, critical thinking often takes a backseat to the instinct to help immediately.”
Fortunately, Reimer became suspicious when the supposed legal representative insisted on cash payment and delivery to a private residence rather than a courthouse. She hung up and immediately called her son directly, discovering he was safely at work and had never been in an accident.
The RCMP advises Canadians to establish family code words for emergency situations and to always verify emergencies by contacting family members directly through known phone numbers. Law enforcement officials also note that legitimate court representatives never demand immediate cash payments delivered to private locations.
“Criminals are exploiting both technological advancement and our deepest emotional connections,” said Sergeant Thomas Reynolds of the RCMP’s Cybercrime Division. “The technology is evolving faster than our protective instincts.”
The Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) has also warned the public about this growing threat, noting that scammers often incorporate local details from social media profiles to make their stories more convincing. They advised residents to limit personal information shared online and to be cautious about posting voice content that could be manipulated.
For Reimer, the experience has changed how her family communicates. “We’ve established verification questions only family would know the answers to,” she explained. “It feels extreme, but so was hearing my son’s voice begging for help when he was nowhere near danger.”
As world news of similar scams continues to emerge, experts in politics and technology regulation have called for stronger legal frameworks to combat synthetic media misuse.
