The Alberta Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit arrested Thompson on Tuesday following a three-week investigation that began after a tip from U.S. authorities.
“What makes this case particularly troubling is the use of emerging technology to victimize children,” said Detective Sergeant Theresa Morrison of the ICE unit. “Thompson allegedly used artificial intelligence to digitally alter innocent images of local youth athletes into explicit content.”
Court documents reveal Thompson coached at Riverside Youth Football Club for the past six seasons, giving him regular access to children aged 12-16. Investigators discovered over 200 AI-modified images on devices seized from his home, with victims potentially including players under his supervision.
