In a remarkable display of community solidarity, the Bayfield Lions Club has stepped forward with a substantial $30,000 donation to support the Bayfield Area Food Bank’s transition to a new permanent facility. The donation, announced yesterday during a ceremonial cheque presentation, marks a significant milestone in the food bank’s expansion efforts amid rising demand for its services.

“This contribution represents our commitment to ensuring no one in our community goes hungry,” said Marion Baker, president of the Bayfield Lions Club. “The food bank has been operating out of temporary spaces for too long. It’s time they had a proper home to continue their essential work.”

The Bayfield Area Food Bank has experienced a 43% increase in client visits since 2023, reflecting the growing economic pressures facing many residents in the region. Currently operating from a leased space at the Bayfield Community Centre, the organization has been searching for a permanent location that would allow for expanded storage, better accessibility, and additional service options.

Food bank coordinator Rhonda Campbell expressed profound gratitude for the donation. “This generous gift from the Lions brings us significantly closer to our fundraising goal,” Campbell told CO24 News. “A permanent facility means we can implement refrigeration systems for fresh produce, create a more dignified shopping experience for clients, and develop educational programs around nutrition and food security.”

According to detailed plans revealed during the presentation, the new facility will feature approximately 2,500 square feet of space, including a client reception area, private consultation rooms, and expanded storage for both dry goods and perishables. The total project cost is estimated at $475,000, with the Lions’ donation covering just over 6% of the required funding.

Local government officials have also shown support for the initiative. Huron County Councilor Jim Henderson, who attended the cheque presentation, confirmed that the county is exploring potential matching grant programs. “Food security is a fundamental community issue,” Henderson stated. “The Lions’ leadership on this project demonstrates how local organizations can drive meaningful change.”

The Bayfield Lions Club raised the funds through various community events held throughout 2024, including their annual summer festival, charity auctions, and a new winter gala that proved particularly successful. Food insecurity statistics for the region reveal why such support is critical. A recent economic analysis showed that approximately 17% of Huron County residents experienced some form of food insecurity last year, with rural areas facing particular challenges due to transportation limitations and fewer service providers.
