The tranquil waters of the St. Lawrence River became the scene of a grim discovery this week as Quebec provincial police confirmed that two bodies have been recovered near Quebec City, triggering an extensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding these deaths.
Police officers were first alerted early Thursday morning when a resident spotted what appeared to be human remains in the river near the municipality of Saint-Laurent-de-l’Île-d’Orléans, approximately 35 kilometers northeast of Quebec City. The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) immediately dispatched emergency response teams to the location.
“Our officers arrived at the scene at approximately 7:30 a.m. and confirmed the presence of human remains in the water,” said SQ spokesperson Sergeant Martin Leblanc. “The first body was recovered shortly thereafter, and specialized dive teams were deployed to conduct a thorough search of the surrounding area.”
This initial recovery prompted an expanded search operation along the riverbanks, resulting in the discovery of a second body several hours later. According to police officials, the second victim was found approximately two kilometers downstream from the first location.
Authorities have yet to release the identities of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin and formal identification procedures. Forensic teams have transported both bodies to the provincial medical examiner’s office where autopsies will be performed to determine the causes of death.
“At this stage of the investigation, we cannot confirm whether these incidents are related or if foul play is suspected,” Sergeant Leblanc added. “We are treating these discoveries with the utmost seriousness and exploring all possible scenarios.”
Local residents expressed shock at the discoveries in what is typically a peaceful recreational area. Marie Tremblay, who has lived near the river for over 30 years, told CO24 News that such incidents are exceedingly rare in the region.
“People come here to fish, to enjoy the natural beauty. This is very disturbing for our community,” Tremblay said.
The SQ has established a command post near the recovery site and is conducting door-to-door inquiries to gather potential witness statements. Maritime traffic in the area has been temporarily restricted as investigators continue their work along the shoreline and in the waters.
Police are also reviewing missing persons reports from across the province to identify potential matches with the recovered remains. According to statistics from the RCMP, approximately 70,000 people are reported missing in Canada each year, though the vast majority are found within days.
Environmental factors could complicate the investigation, as the St. Lawrence River’s strong currents mean bodies could have entered the water from locations many kilometers upstream. Water temperature and conditions will be crucial elements in determining how long the remains had been in the river.
