“Canada stands shoulder to shoulder with our allies in defending democracy and international order,” Carney declared during his visit to the Baltic nation, where approximately 1,000 Canadian troops currently lead a multinational NATO battlegroup. “This deployment represents our unwavering commitment to collective security.”
The enhanced deployment will see Canada provide additional troops, equipment, and logistical support to the existing mission. Military analysts suggest this move represents one of the most substantial Canadian military commitments in Europe since the Cold War era, positioning Canada as a key contributor to NATO’s deterrence strategy.
Latvia’s Foreign Minister Baiba Braže expressed profound gratitude for Canada’s commitment. “This partnership strengthens not just Latvia’s security, but the security of the entire NATO alliance at a critical moment in European history,” she stated during the joint press conference.

Canada’s military has maintained a continuous presence in Latvia since 2017 as part of NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence. This latest announcement expands that commitment at a moment when many NATO allies are reassessing their defense postures across Europe.
