The grieving family of a Hamilton pedestrian struck down in October may finally see justice served. Hamilton Police announced Wednesday they have arrested a suspect in connection with the fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of a 65-year-old man on the city’s east side.
Investigators from the Collision Reconstruction Unit arrested 28-year-old Hamilton resident Tristan McKenzie, charging him with failing to stop at an accident resulting in death. The charges come after an exhaustive three-month investigation that involved forensic evidence collection, surveillance footage analysis, and witness testimonies.
“This arrest represents significant progress in what has been a complex investigation,” said Detective Sergeant Scott Moreton in a statement released by Hamilton Police. “Our team has worked tirelessly to piece together the events of that night and identify the person responsible.”
The incident occurred on October 17, 2023, shortly after 9:30 p.m., when the victim was crossing at the intersection of Barton Street East and Ottawa Street North. According to police reports, the driver struck the pedestrian with considerable force before fleeing the scene without stopping to render assistance.
Emergency services rushed to the location after several witnesses called 911, but despite paramedics’ efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The subsequent investigation revealed the victim had been lawfully crossing at a marked crosswalk when the collision occurred.
“This case highlights the devastating consequences of reckless driving and the moral obligation to remain at the scene of an accident,” said Hamilton Police Chief Frank Bergen. “No family should have to endure the additional trauma of not knowing who was responsible for their loved one’s death.”
Community members played a crucial role in the investigation, with several businesses providing surveillance footage that helped investigators identify the suspect vehicle – a dark-colored sedan with front-end damage. Police analysis of debris left at the scene also provided critical evidence linking the suspect to the crime.
McKenzie appeared in court yesterday for a bail hearing, where the Crown opposed his release citing the serious nature of the charges. If convicted, he faces up to life imprisonment under Canada’s Criminal Code provisions for failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing death.
The victim’s family, who requested privacy during this difficult time, released a brief statement through their lawyer expressing gratitude to law enforcement and the community for their support during the investigation.
