A deadly altercation in Brantford’s downtown core has left one person dead and another in police custody as investigators work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the city’s latest violent incident.
Brantford Police Service officers descended on the downtown area Friday afternoon following reports of a stabbing near the intersection of Colborne and Queen streets. Emergency responders arrived at approximately 2:30 p.m. to find a victim with life-threatening injuries, according to police spokesperson Sarah Ferguson.
“First responders immediately administered emergency medical care at the scene before the victim was transported to hospital,” Ferguson told CO24 News. “Despite the efforts of medical personnel, the victim succumbed to their injuries.”
Within hours of the incident, police confirmed they had apprehended a male suspect who remains in custody. Authorities have not yet released the identities of either the victim or the suspect, citing the ongoing investigation and pending notification of next of kin.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the downtown area was quickly cordoned off with yellow police tape. Local business owner Martin Chen, whose shop sits just meters from where the incident occurred, told CO24 that he heard shouting before police arrived.
“I was helping a customer when I heard commotion outside. By the time I stepped out, there were already several police cars and an ambulance,” Chen said. “This area has had issues before, but nothing this serious in recent memory.”
The fatal stabbing marks the third homicide in Brantford this year, raising concerns among community members about downtown safety. City Councillor Jennifer Roberts called the incident “deeply troubling” and indicated that public safety discussions would be prioritized at the next council meeting.
“We cannot allow violence to become normalized in our downtown core,” Roberts said. “This affects not just the immediate victims but the entire community’s sense of security.”
Police have established a command post near the scene and are appealing to the public for information. Investigators are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who may have witnessed the altercation or who possesses security camera footage from the area between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
The investigation has involved the Brantford Police Major Crime Unit, forensic identification services, and uniformed patrol officers who continue to process the scene. Several streets in the downtown area remained closed into the evening as investigators gathered evidence.
Local resident Amelia Thompson, who works in the area, expressed concern about the incident’s impact on downtown revitalization efforts. “There’s been so much work to improve the downtown image and attract businesses. Something like this sets those efforts back significantly,” she told CO24.
