Understanding the Benefits of Regular Exercise
Physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular exercise can help improve your brain health, manage weight, reduce disease risk, strengthen bones and muscles, and improve your ability to do everyday activities.
Adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, plus muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days per week. Don’t worry if you can’t reach 150 minutes right away – any amount of physical activity has health benefits!
Different types of exercise provide different benefits. Aerobic exercises like walking, swimming, and cycling improve cardiovascular health. Strength training builds muscle mass and boosts metabolism. Flexibility exercises such as yoga help maintain range of motion and prevent injuries.
Want to get started? The American Heart Association recommends beginning slowly and gradually increasing intensity. Remember that consistency is more important than intensity when starting a new exercise routine.
