In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a devastating collision in Maple Ridge claimed at least one life and prompted authorities to shut down a significant portion of Lougheed Highway eastbound, creating substantial traffic disruptions throughout the region.
Emergency services responded to the scene near 240th Street around 5:30 a.m., where they discovered a severe multi-vehicle collision that left wreckage scattered across the roadway. Ridge Meadows RCMP quickly established a perimeter, redirecting eastbound traffic while collision analysts began their meticulous investigation of the crash site.
“This is a particularly complex scene requiring thorough examination,” said Sergeant Jennifer Hyland of Ridge Meadows RCMP. “We’re asking for the public’s patience as our investigators work to determine exactly what transpired in the moments leading up to this tragedy.”
The Canada News team has learned that the highway closure extends from 240th Street to 272nd Street, with officials warning the route may remain closed well into the afternoon. Commuters are being advised to seek alternative routes through Maple Ridge or consider postponing non-essential travel in the area.
TransLink has implemented detours for several bus routes serving the corridor, with passengers experiencing delays of up to 40 minutes on some services. The transit authority has deployed additional resources to minimize disruptions, but acknowledges the challenges presented by the sudden closure of this vital transportation artery.
This marks the third fatal collision on this stretch of Lougheed Highway this year, raising concerns among local safety advocates about road conditions and speed enforcement in the area. The Ministry of Transportation confirmed they are reviewing safety measures along the corridor in light of recent incidents.
Witnesses describe a chaotic scene in the moments following the crash, with several bystanders rushing to provide assistance before emergency responders arrived. Local resident Michael Thornton told our CO24 News team he heard “a tremendous crash” from his home near the highway.
“It was unlike anything I’ve heard before – metal crushing, tires screeching. I knew immediately something terrible had happened,” Thornton recalled.
The BC Coroners Service has been notified and will conduct its own investigation into the fatality. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin.
Maple Ridge Mayor Dan Ruimy expressed his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and urged drivers to exercise caution, particularly during early morning hours when visibility can be compromised.
“Every life lost on our roadways is one too many,” Ruimy stated. “We await the results of the investigation, I implore everyone to slow down and remain vigilant while driving.”
As the investigation continues, questions emerge about what additional safety measures might prevent similar tragedies in the future. Could enhanced lighting, reduced speed limits, or median barriers make a difference on this stretch of highway that has seen multiple fatal accidents in recent months?
