In a significant leadership transition that signals both continuity and evolution for one of Japan’s most innovative automakers, Mazda Canada announced today that Chief Executive Officer David Klan will retire effective July 1, 2025, with current Chief Operating Officer Amy Fleming appointed as his successor.

The handover marks a milestone for Mazda’s Canadian operations as Fleming becomes the first woman to lead the subsidiary—a noteworthy development in the traditionally male-dominated automotive industry where only 8% of executive positions are held by women, according to recent industry data.

“After 31 years with Mazda, the decision to retire wasn’t made lightly,” Klan said during the announcement at Mazda Canada’s Richmond Hill headquarters. “But I couldn’t be more confident in Amy’s ability to guide Mazda through its next chapter of growth and transformation in the Canadian market.”

Fleming, who joined Mazda Canada in 2019 after executive roles at BMW and Honda, has been instrumental in navigating the company through recent industry-wide challenges including supply chain disruptions and the accelerating shift toward electrification. Under her operational leadership, Mazda’s Canadian market share increased by 0.7% during a period when many competitors faced declining sales.

“The automotive landscape is undergoing its most profound transformation since the introduction of the assembly line,” Fleming told reporters. “Mazda’s commitment to human-centric design and driving pleasure gives us a unique position as we balance the transition to electrified vehicles while continuing to deliver the engaging driving experience our customers expect.”

The leadership change comes at a pivotal moment for Mazda globally. The automaker recently announced an $11 billion investment in electrification, with plans to introduce eight new electric models by 2028. Fleming will oversee the Canadian market introduction of the first of these vehicles, expected to arrive in late 2025.

Industry analysts view Fleming’s appointment as strategically sound, citing her deep understanding of both traditional automotive operations and the technological transformation reshaping the industry.

“Fleming has the ideal background to lead Mazda Canada through this period of rapid change,” said Automotive Analysts Association chair Marcus Thompson. “Her experience balancing brand heritage with forward-looking innovation matches perfectly with Mazda’s position in the market.”

The succession plan has been in development for over 18 months, according to company sources, allowing for a comprehensive transition period. Fleming will officially assume CEO responsibilities after a six-month transition period working alongside Klan.
