In what investigators are calling “almost a miracle,” three-year-old Léo Tremblay was found alive Wednesday evening after an extensive four-day search that mobilized hundreds of officers, volunteers, and specialized units across Montreal’s northern suburbs.
The toddler, who disappeared from his family’s backyard in Laval on Saturday afternoon, was discovered in a wooded area approximately 3 kilometers from his home, dehydrated but otherwise in stable condition according to medical personnel who examined him at the scene.
“In my 24 years of police work, I’ve never witnessed such a remarkable outcome in a case that grew more concerning with each passing hour,” said Chief Inspector Marie Beauchamp of the Laval Police Service. “The fact that we found this child alive after four nights outdoors is something we’ll remember for the rest of our careers.”
The breakthrough came when a K-9 unit detected Léo’s scent near an abandoned utility shed bordering a conservation area. Officer Jean-Philippe Moreau and his German Shepherd, Rex, located the boy curled up beneath dense underbrush, still wearing the blue dinosaur t-shirt and red shorts he had on when he disappeared.
“He was frightened but conscious, which is remarkable considering the weather conditions we’ve experienced,” said Moreau. “When I approached him, he simply asked for his mother and some water.”
Temperatures in the Montreal region had dipped to 8°C overnight during the search period, raising serious concerns about hypothermia and exposure. Medical professionals at Sainte-Justine Children’s Hospital, where Léo was transported, expressed amazement at his resilience.
“While he shows signs of dehydration and minor scratches, there are no life-threatening injuries,” Dr. Sophie Tremblay told reporters. “Children can sometimes demonstrate extraordinary resilience in survival situations, but this case is certainly exceptional.”
