The aroma of fresh Atlantic lobster will once again fill the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre this May as the Rotary Club of Penticton revives its signature fundraising event with a renewed mission to combat childhood food insecurity in the region.

After a successful return in 2023 following pandemic-related cancellations, the 2024 Lobster Feast is scheduled for Saturday, May 25, promising an evening of maritime culinary delights while addressing a critical issue affecting local families.

“We’re seeing alarming rates of food insecurity among children in our community,” said Barb Hoolaeff, president of the Penticton Rotary Club. “The proceeds from this year’s event will directly support programs ensuring no child in our district goes hungry, particularly during weekends and school breaks when many vulnerable students lose access to school meal programs.”

The event, now in its 22nd year, has historically raised over $40,000 annually for community initiatives. This year’s funds will primarily support the Rotary’s Weekend Backpack Program, which discreetly provides nutritious food packages to children identified by school counselors as facing food insecurity at home.

Each ticket to the Lobster Feast includes a 1.5-pound Atlantic lobster flown in fresh that morning, accompanied by a full buffet dinner, dancing, and both silent and live auctions. For those preferring alternatives to shellfish, a New York steak option is available upon request when purchasing tickets.

“The community response has been overwhelming,” noted event chair Tracy Van Raes. “Local businesses have stepped up with remarkable auction items, from exclusive wine packages to vacation getaways. It’s heartening to see Penticton come together to address such a fundamental need.”

According to recent data from Food Banks Canada, approximately one in five children in British Columbia experiences food insecurity, with rates in the Okanagan region tracking similarly to provincial averages.

“Beyond the immediate hunger relief, we’re working toward sustainable solutions,” explained Hoolaeff. “Part of our initiative includes educational components teaching families about nutrition and food preparation on limited budgets.”

Tickets for the event are $90 each, with tables of eight available for $700. Early purchase is recommended as the event typically sells out well in advance. Tickets can be purchased through the Rotary Club website or from any Rotary Club member.

The evening will also feature entertainment by local musicians and presentations highlighting the impact of previous Rotary initiatives in the community.

As our region continues to face economic pressures and rising food costs, how might community events like the Lobster Feast evolve to address the changing nature of food insecurity while maintaining their traditional appeal? The answer may lie in the continued innovation and dedication of organizations like the Penticton Rotary Club, who balance celebration with purposeful community support.
