A devastating single-vehicle collision in Pickering’s rural northeast claimed three lives and left two others fighting for survival late Thursday evening, marking one of the region’s most tragic accidents this year.
The catastrophic crash occurred shortly after 9 p.m. when a white SUV traveling westbound on Highway 7 near Concession Road 6 veered off the roadway and collided with a concrete culvert. The impact was so severe that emergency responders described the scene as “catastrophic” upon arrival.
“This is an absolutely heartbreaking incident that has deeply affected our entire community,” said Durham Regional Police Inspector Kathryn Morgan. “Our collision investigation unit is meticulously examining all potential factors that may have contributed to this tragedy.”
Three occupants of the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others sustained life-threatening injuries and were rushed to trauma centers in Toronto. Hospital officials have described their condition as critical but stable as of Friday morning.
Witnesses reported hearing a thunderous crash that echoed through the normally quiet rural area. John Sanderson, who lives approximately 500 meters from the crash site, told CO24 News that the sound was unmistakable.
“I was sitting in my living room when I heard what sounded like an explosion. When I went outside, I could see smoke rising in the distance,” Sanderson said. “It’s a stretch of road where people often drive too fast, especially at night.”
Preliminary investigation suggests that speed may have been a contributing factor, though authorities have not ruled out other possibilities such as mechanical failure or driver impairment. The names of the victims have not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Highway 7 between Concession Roads 5 and 7 remained closed for nearly 12 hours as specialized collision investigators documented the scene, gathered evidence, and worked to reconstruct the accident sequence. The closure caused significant traffic disruptions throughout the eastern GTA during Friday morning’s commute.
