A disturbing incident at a west-end Toronto park has left local families shaken after police arrested a 28-year-old man accused of approaching, grabbing, and filming multiple children without consent.
The alarming events unfolded Sunday afternoon at King’s Mill Park near Bloor Street West and Kingsway, where families had gathered to enjoy the unseasonably warm weekend weather. According to Toronto Police, officers responded to multiple emergency calls reporting a suspicious man who was approaching children in the playground area.
“The suspect was observed following several children around the park, attempting to engage them in conversation while recording them with his mobile device,” Detective Sarah Williamson told CO24 News. “In at least two instances, he allegedly made physical contact with children, grabbing their arms before parents intervened.”
Witnesses report that several vigilant parents confronted the man after noticing his suspicious behavior, prompting him to flee the scene. Quick-thinking bystanders provided police with detailed descriptions and photos captured on their phones, which proved crucial in the subsequent investigation.
Officers located and arrested the suspect approximately one kilometer from the park. The Toronto resident now faces multiple charges, including criminal harassment, mischief, and assault. Police have seized electronic devices for forensic examination as the investigation continues.
“We’re examining the suspect’s devices to determine the extent of the recordings and whether similar incidents may have occurred elsewhere,” Williamson added. “At this time, we have no evidence linking this individual to other reported incidents in the city’s parks.”
This case highlights the ongoing safety concerns in public spaces frequented by children. According to Statistics Canada data, reports of suspicious behavior toward children in public areas have increased by nearly 18% across major Canadian urban centers in the past three years.
Parents at the park expressed their gratitude for the rapid police response but voiced concerns about their children’s safety in community spaces.
“I bring my kids here almost every weekend,” said Mariam Khalil, a mother of two who witnessed the incident. “It’s terrifying to think someone would target children in broad daylight in such a busy park. We need to remain vigilant, but we shouldn’t have to live in fear when taking our kids to play.”
