In a significant development that has sent ripples through both legal and political circles, an FBI forensic analyst testified Tuesday that DNA evidence collected from the AR-style rifle and other items at the scene of the July assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump matches that of Ryan Wesley Routh, the man charged with the failed attack.
The testimony came during a federal court hearing in West Palm Beach, where prosecutors are building what appears to be an increasingly solid case against the 58-year-old suspect. According to FBI DNA expert Stacey Jones, genetic material recovered from the rifle’s trigger, grip, and magazine revealed a match to Routh with near-statistical certainty.
“The probability that someone other than the defendant left these DNA traces is astronomically low,” Jones stated during her detailed testimony. “The samples collected from critical areas of the weapon show a definitive match to the defendant’s profile.”
Investigators also recovered matching DNA from a GoPro camera, cell phone, and backpack abandoned at the scene of the September 15 incident at Trump International Golf Club. These items were discovered in the wooded area where Secret Service agents spotted a rifle barrel protruding through the fence line, approximately 500 yards from where the former president was golfing.
The forensic revelations strengthen the prosecution’s case against Routh, who faces multiple federal charges including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, which carries potential life imprisonment. Court documents previously revealed that agents recovered a “kill list” in Routh’s vehicle that included Trump’s name alongside several other prominent political figures.
Defense attorney Robert Adler has challenged aspects of the investigation, questioning the handling of evidence and suggesting that his client’s actions have been mischaracterized. “While DNA evidence is compelling, it doesn’t tell the complete story of intent or circumstances,” Adler argued during cross-examination.
The attempted assassination has intensified security concerns around political figures during an already volatile election season. Trump, who narrowly escaped an earlier assassination attempt in July that left him with a minor ear injury, has referenced both incidents during campaign appearances, characterizing them as politically motivated attacks.
Security experts from various agencies have implemented enhanced protective measures around all major political figures as the November election approaches. “These incidents represent an alarming escalation in the threats facing our democratic process,” noted former Secret Service Deputy Director James Murray in a statement to CO24 News.
