In a gesture of respect and gratitude toward those who have served our nation, the Toronto Transit Commission has announced that Canadian Armed Forces veterans and current military personnel will ride for free this Saturday, August 19th, as part of Warriors’ Day commemorations.
The initiative coincides with the annual Warriors’ Day Parade at Exhibition Place, a longstanding tradition dating back to 1921 that honors the sacrifices made by Canadian service members. This year’s parade marks the 102nd gathering, continuing a legacy of recognition that has become deeply embedded in Toronto’s cultural calendar.
“Providing complimentary transit service is just one small way we can show our appreciation to those who have served and continue to serve our country,” said TTC Chair Jon Burnside in a statement released Wednesday. “The Warriors’ Day Parade represents an important moment for reflection on the contributions and sacrifices of our military community.”
Veterans and active military personnel need only present military identification to TTC operators or station attendants to access the free service. Acceptable identification includes regimental cards, Canadian Forces ID, Veterans Affairs Canada Health cards, or other proof of service. One companion may also ride free with each veteran or service member.
The special service extends across the entire TTC network, including subways, streetcars, and buses, running from the start of service until the end of the day on Saturday.
This year’s Warriors’ Day Parade begins at 10:30 a.m. at Exhibition Place, with participants gathering to march in honor of those who have served. The parade traditionally attracts thousands of spectators and participants, creating a powerful display of community support for veterans.
“Transit accessibility is particularly important for our older veterans,” notes military historian Dr. Eleanor Thompson from the Canadian War Museum. “Many veterans rely on public transportation to attend commemorative events, and removing financial barriers helps ensure they can participate in these important ceremonies.”
The TTC’s gesture comes as communities across Canada seek meaningful ways to acknowledge veterans’ contributions beyond traditional observances like Remembrance Day.
